At Veolia we are always striving to deliver innovative ways to turn waste into a resource for our customers throughout the UK. Click below for some examples of our great work in action.

Dairy Crest

Dairy Crest is the UK’s leading chilled dairy foods company. They manufacture a range of everyday dairy brands including the award-winning Cathedral City cheddar, Clover spread, Country life butter and FRijj, and also supply milk to retailers throughout the country.

Dairy Crest is committed to reducing its environmental footprint by reducing its energy consumption and dependency on fossil fuel. Progress to date has principally been achieved through the use of environmentally friendly biomass boilers and through every day efficiency saving and awareness programmes.

The challenge

The Dairy Crest Creamery in Davidstow makes 55,000 tonnes of cheese per year and  uses over 100,000 tonnes of steam in the process. To meet its pledge to achieve a 28% group carbon reduction by 2020 Dairy Crest wanted to use renewable energy for the provision of steam required in the cheese making operation.

The solution

In 2010 Dairy Crest commissioned Veolia* to design and construct a 12MW biomass steam plant that could supply the steam requirements for the pasteurisation and drying processes vital to cheese manufacture.

The solution is based on two wood pellet fired  boilers that replace clean fuel oil-fired equipment and reduce the factory’s carbon emissions by 20,000 tonnes a year. This lowers Dairy Crest’s site emissions by 60% and deliver a 12% reduction in Dairy Crest’s overall carbon emissions - a major step towards meeting the commitment to achieve 28% carbon reduction by 2020.

Veolia’s ability to produce and deliver the supply of wood pellets made from waste wood was a strong point of its proposal. To ensure continuity of fuel supply and control fuel price fluctuations Veolia supply fuel from dedicated wood processing mills which ensures that the biomass energy centre will meet its supply obligations now and into the future. The energy centre is fuelled using wood pellets manufactured from UK sourced life expired wood which reduces the landfill burden and recycles further use.

60% reduction in site emissions

12% reduction in overall carbon emissions

100,000 tonnes per year of carbon neutral steam

The results

The energy savings meet Dairy Crest’s internal payback requirements which means the plant will provide a net annual saving early in its operating life. The plant was also constructed quickly to meet investment requirements - construction started in May 2010 and the plant was burning biomass 10 months later with full steam delivery achieved within one year. Veolia now operate and maintain the biomass steam plant on a 24/7 year round basis, using a dedicated site team supported by the local network of mobile technicians and specialist engineers.

What our client had to say

"The energy group really opened our eyes to the opportunities offered by the implementation of biomass on our Davidstow site."
